What are the different stages of audio post-production?

-

Audio post-production is an important component of the entertainment industry. It involves different stages as per the requirements of a particular project including the dialogue editing, automated dialogue replacement stage, sound design, foley, music composition, mixing, and many others. Audio is a strong constituent of every video as its success is directly linked to the audio element. Students opt for courses in post-production in Montreal or other parts of the world so that they can dominate this factor by developing expertise to generate more success in terms of their chiseled post-production audio skills. Here is the list of stages that are basic to every post-production scenario:

• Dialogue editing:

This stage involves the collection of raw footage for editing and trimming it to the point that seems to be appropriate. Professionals must listen to each recording in a very sophisticated manner so that it synchronizes well with the existing video files. They organize it in a particular list and remove the unwanted parts and make it to the length that is perfect in synchrony with all the other elements.

• Automated dialogue replacement:

Sometimes, the recording seems to be missing some of the essential parts of the audio file or it is too noisy to be heard very well. In such cases, automated dialogue replacement techniques are used to replace the corrupt recording with a new one. This recording is done in a studio and involves artists to be imitating the scene that they might have recorded earlier. They try to imitate it as closely as possible to the original recording.

• Sound design:

This stage involves the addition of sound effects to these edited audio files to make them look more realistic and ambient as well. They add the background music with all the required elements like the thudding of a hammer, the sound of lightning, and much more. Numerous software and applications are used in this process to create a natural picture of what is happening in that video recording.

• Foley:

In this stage, if there are humans in the background making different sounds, noises, and doing different actions, then a particular sound is added to this file to augment the effect of realism into this video clip. The only difference between the stage of adding sound design and foley is the appearance of humans in the background. Foley artists will perform in a studio to create such sounds replication the ones in the video clip.

• Music composition:

The stage involves the incorporation, development, and creation of soundtracks that are to be incorporated into the video. Singers are hired to perform in the studio while writers are also summoned with their scripts so that they can coordinate with the existing elements in a story.

• Mixing:

This is most likely the last stage of audio post-production where the balancing of all the audio files is done in a very sophisticated manner to give it a final edit. EQ, compression, mixing, loudness, optimal effects, and different kinds of sound adjustments are done to balance the overall audio of a particular project.

All the stages that are mentioned above are the basic ones followed by every professional dealing with post-production audio studios. Numerous other components are used to improvise the final output and to bring in the element of clarity into the picture.
